Who we are and what we do

Had it gone ahead, the Office of the Health Professions Adjudicator (OHPA) would have adjudicated on the fitness to practice of the medical profession.  OHPA was born out of the recommendations from Dame Janet Smith’s report following the Shipman Inquiry and subsequent legislation through the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

The report, legislation and consultation concluded that the confidence of the public and health professionals would increase if separate and independent bodies carried out the roles of investigation and adjudication which are both currently performed by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Organisational structure

The board and senior management team set strategic direction and oversee delivery, provide financial stewardship and ensure corporate governance.

  • OHPA Board – The OHPA Board consists of three non-executives, a chair and chief executive. It holds regular meetings.
  • Transitional Senior Management Team – The transitional senior management team consists of a number of interim directors reporting to the chief executive, Stephen Shaw.
