Walter Merricks biography
Before taking up his post as chair of OHPA in November 2009, Walter Merricks CBE had been the founding chief ombudsman of the Financial Ombudsman Service, the largest ombudsman scheme in the world. Immediately prior to that he was the Insurance Ombudsman.
Walter qualified as a solicitor and his career in the legal world has included:
- public practice at the Camden Community Law Centre
- academic law at Brunel University
- broadcasting and journalism on legal topics, and
- professional regulation and representation as a senior officer of the Law Society
He has been chairman of the British and Irish Ombudsman Association and of the International Network of Financial Ombudsman schemes.
